Today is Passion Sunday – the fifth Sunday of Lent. It marks the beginning of a two-week period called Passiontide that ends on Holy Saturday – the eve of Easter Day. The Passion of Christ is the story of Jesus’s arrest, trial and suffering, ending with his execution by crucifixion – albeit the full story ends in his glorious resurrection. The word Passion comes from the Latin word for suffering.
During this coming week we will turn from our more general Lenten reflections on Jesus towards His last days on earth as he prepared to enter Jerusalem for the final time, hailed as a saviour only to be condemned as a criminal.
