Baritone’s visit to Baldwin

We held our Guest Service on Sunday 29th July, when our special guest was Mr Philip Summerscales with his friend Mr C Idle at the organ.

Philip started by reading a passage from a letter of St Paul to the Ephesians then his first solo was a piece he first sang called ‘Silent Voices’. He said he had always enjoyed singing well at school, mostly opera such as the Mikado. He also told us he had sung for the BBC well over 200 times.

Philip’s wife Margaret is a soprano and also sang in the ‘Marriage of Figaro’ at the Royal Opera House. Philip reminisced that he used to receive 8 guineas for singing which helped to pay the bills. He also sang at the Floral Hall in Cardiff where he received £50 per week to sing 50 songs. He finished the evening by singing ‘Where’ere you Walk’ by Handel. We all enjoyed a wonderful evening of music and beautiful song.
